The Basset Hound may descend from "dwarfed" Bloodhounds. Although it originated in France, it is now popular in Great Britain and the United States. The gentle and benign Basset Hound was once a superb hunting dog. Even now, Bassets participate in field trials, but the typical pet Basset is heavy, long and low.
