In the 1860's, French dog breeders imported some very small Bulldogs from Great Britain and bred them with French terriers. By the turn of the century, the French Bulldog was a popular butcher's and coachman's companion. Curiously, the breed was first recognized not in France or Great Britain but in the United States. No longer as numerous as it once was, the French Bulldog has moved up the social ladder and now resides in affluent households!
