With dramatic ears reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, its small size, and a fine, silky and abundant coat, the Papillon looks like a classic lap dog. Not so. The Papillon is well constructed and physically fit, suitable for the city or countryside. Stories say that the Papillon is descended from the 16th century Spanish Dwarf Spaniel. Its shape and long coat, however, suggest northern Spitz blood in its origins.
