Pets and Animals Shop > Dog Art by Maggie Ross > non-Sporting > CHOW CHOW
The origins of the Chow Chow remain a mystery, although without a doubt it is of spitz descent. Historians in the early 1700s described a black-tongued dog encountered in the Orient. The Chow Chow first arrived in Great Britain in 1780. English sailors named it after the term they used to describe miscellaneous ship cargo. Although it looks like an overstuffed teddy bear, the Chow Chow is not cuddly. It is a one-person dog, with a terrier-like tendency to snap or bite. The Chow Chow is probably entitled to be naturally aloof and stubborn. Throughout Mongolia and Manchuria its meat was once a delicacy, and its skin a popular fur for clothing. Click on an item to get more information on it (or if you want to buy it, of course).
